Designing Contemporary Art Sculptures: Thinking Beyond the Mould

How artist Ahu Didem Sever designs contemporary art sculptures at AND ICONIC: starting from an idea, then form, colour, material and hand-finished surface.

Short answer: designing contemporary art sculpture means starting from an idea rather than a ready-made template, then shaping form, colour, material and surface until the piece has its own character. At AND ICONIC, the design is never finished until the last hand-applied detail.

Why “the mould” is more than a tool

In Turkish, the word for mould and for convention is the same: kalıp. I like that overlap. A mould helps you repeat a shape, and a convention helps you repeat an idea. Contemporary art starts where repetition ends. The form may be a classical bust or a balloon animal, but what makes it contemporary is what you decide to do with it.

My design process

  1. Idea. Every AND ICONIC sculpture begins with a thought, a reference or a feeling: mythology, pop culture, luxury, humour.
  2. Form. I choose or reinterpret a form that can carry that idea, from classical figures to playful characters.
  3. Colour. Palettes can be neon, pastel, mirror chrome or graffiti-heavy. Colour sets the attitude of the piece.
  4. Material. We work with premium resin, often combined with marble powder, which allows refined detail and a sculptural weight.
  5. Surface. Spray-gun painting, airbrush techniques, hand-painted graffiti and chrome finishing are applied in my own atelier, so the visual character stays in the artist's hands.

Contemporary does not mean random

Thinking beyond conventions does not mean ignoring craft. Clean chrome, balanced composition and carefully placed drips all take skill. The freedom comes from knowing the rules well enough to decide which ones to bend.

Reinterpretation, not reproduction

Many of my pieces are inspired by classical sculpture, pop art, street art and fashion culture. They are original reinterpretations in my own palette and language, not reproductions of any existing work.

Design with you

If you have your own idea, you can commission a custom colour, finish or concept. Custom pieces are developed directly in the studio, and each request is evaluated individually. Production time depends on size, surface technique and finish, especially for chrome.
